Research & Teaching

Main research area: Experimental and theoretical geochemistry and petrology
My principal research is oriented towards understanding mantle-core separation scenarios in the early history of the Earth and other terrestrial planets and on the theoretically and experimentally based investigation of the physico-chemical interaction processes between (1) coexisting silicate liquids, (2) coexisting silicate and sulfide liquids and (3) coexisting silicate, sulfide and metal liquids. Results of these investigations can be applied to differentiation processes in today's silicate Earth.

Current research projects

  • Partition behavior of siderophile and chalcophile elements between coexisting silicate, metal, and/or metal sulfide phases (various independent projects with (1) Ph.Kegler, H.Palme, Universität Köln, Cologne, Germany; (2) C.Ballhaus, M.Lagos, C.Münker, Universität Münster, Muenster, Germany; (3) K.Lodders, Washington University, St.Louis, USA; (4) T.L.Grove, MIT,Cambridge, USA)
  • Textural equilibria of iron sulfide liquids in partly molten silicate aggregates (with D.Frost,D.C.Rubie, H.Terasaki, Bayerisches Geoinstitut, Bayreuth, Germany)
  • Fractionation of platinum group elements during mantle melting and stabilities of sulfide minerals (with C.Ballhaus, C.Bockrath, V.Laurenz, Universität Münster, Muenster, Germany)
  • Differentiation of basaltic melts with the main emphasis on the origin of SiO2-rich residual melts (with J.Berndt-Gerdes, J.E.Hoffmann, both Universität Münster, Muenster, Germany and J.Köpke,Universität Hannover, Hannover, Germany)
  • Systematic study on laser ablation rates of geologically relevant materials by using a 193 nm Excimer laser as part of the LA-HR-ICP mass spectrometer (with J.Berndt-Gerdes, C. Ockert, Universität Münster, Muenster, Germany)
