The institute has two solid media piston-cylinder
presses capable of routine operation to 40 kilobars (4 GPa) and
2000°C. With this experimental equipment we are
capable of simulating a broad spectrum of crust and upper mantle
environments. Furthermore, our equipment is also used for materials
science-type projects enabling us to synthesize a broad range of novel
materials at high pressure conditions.

| Applications |
| The piston cylinder apparatus
at Münster University is the work horse of the experimental
petrology and geochemistry group at Münster. We use
these machines mainly to simulate processes in the deep Earth but we
also work on a number of materials research type projects which involve
high pressure synthesis of materials. Current research revolves around
simulation of partial melting processes in the deep continental crust
and the upper mantle, trace element transfer in subduction zone fluids,
and synthesis of novel materials at high pressures and temperatures. |
