Thematische Exegese alttestamentlicher Texte
Much of the Old Testament / Hebrew Bible consists of prophetic texts. This course will examine the phenomena of prophecy, divination, and extispicy through the critical study of a variety of Old Testament texts. We will cover figures described as “prophets” (m/f), “seers”, “man of God”, or with similar – or alternatively, pejorative (“witch”, “diviner”) – terminology. In this survey, we primarily will address texts from the prophetic corpora (both Former and Latter), but also other narrative as well as legal materials. The historical and cultural environs of ancient Israel and Judah – particularly the ancient Near East, but also Greece – will serve as both a background and a contrast to these phenomena. To this end, several extrabiblical texts (in Hebrew, Aramaic, Akkadian, etc.) will contribute to the discussion (English or German translations are available for the non-Hebrew materials).
