The coursework focusses on the history of the rites of Christian initiation. The presentations will try to explain and to understand modern phenomena as temporary results of many decisions of individuals and groups throughout its history of development according to extant documents. Because of its position within the curricula of the department of Catholic theology, Catholic liturgies will be foregrounded in the discussion of contemporary celebrations of baptism. Nevertheless, the general structure of the course will take into account that the subject of Christian initiation can only be studied in an ecumenical perspective. Regarding epochs and sources as well as the choice of topics to be studied and discussed, antiquity and the middle ages will be emphasized.
This course is organized as a series of presentations given by the professor. Each presentation includes time for questions and discussion. Students are not required to read sources in their original languages. Exams can be taken in English or German although sources and literature will largely be offered in English translations (except for liturgical texts which are only used in Germany). The mode and scope of examinations depends on the requirements of each student's curriculum. Course attendance is optional and will not be monitored or documented.
