Baracke - Cultural Center at the Aasee
The Baracke is a student cultural and event center, as well as the home of the Political Science and Sociology departments, located between the Aasee and the Institute for Political Science at Scharnhorststraße 106 in Münster. Yet it is far from being just a new building where students drink coffee.
Through its non-commercial, student-self-managed structure, the barrack aims to preserve cultural and political free spaces, counteract their degradation, and create additional ones. This includes the promotion of equality and diversity and opposes any form of social discrimination.
What sounds like a lofty goal manifests itself in a wide range of different groups that use the barracks, as well as a variety of events: Theater rehearsals, regular open dates, concerts, parties, film screenings, seminars and lectures. The barrack serves the organizers as an open structure for the realization of their concerns, the artists as a possibility of expression and represents for the users an alternative to the through-commercialized cultural machinery.
