The Mediatized Home III: Contrasting Household Studies on Drivers of Dynamic Mediatization

The project aims at analyzing how dynamic processes of digital mediatization are initiated particularly within the home. For this purpose, the media use will be traced within households where mainly digital media are used and where classical media only have minor relevance. This research interest builds upon insights from the previous projects “The mediatized home I” and “The mediatized home II”.

Through social media applications such as Twitter, Facebook and blogs, the opportunities for public communication have expanded. Journalistic "gatekeeper" on the Internet are no longer the central mediator of topics and opinions.

The Media for Democracy Monitor 2010

The German study gathers and analyses secondary data about key parameters of the media system and conducts interviews with journalists of leading German media outlets (Print, Radio, Television, Internet) and with delegates of media trade unions and journalistic associations.

Through the EU excellency program “Starting Independent Researcher Grants" the European Research Council (ERC) has positively evaluated a proposal by Prof. Dr. Thorsten Quandt, recommending it for a grant of 1.84 million Euro.

Cleavages, governance and the media in European metropolitan areas

The project will focus on two sets of research questions, relating to (a) the responsiveness of metropolitan policies, i.e. the ways in which preferences and demands are aggregated into policy decisions with an urban regional scope, and (b) the accountability of metropolitan policy-making, i.e. the extent to which responsibility for policy outcomes at that level are attributed to those who actually made the decisions.
