MA European Studies

Managing Europe is a complex challenge. This can largely be attributed to Europe’s multi-level dimension, arising from the intricate system of local, regional, national, European and international governmental institutions. Traditional, national structures are more frequently being superseded and work is being conducted in an open, multi-level structure. The complex environment in which these levels of government converge serves as the focus of the European Studies (ES) Master’s degree programme.

The European Studies Master’s programme is a special 1.5-year degree programme offered jointly by a Dutch and a German university. Lectures are held at the Center for European Studies (School of Management and Governance, University of Twente) and the Institute for Political Science (WWU Münster). Students who successfully complete this programme receive a Dutch and a German diploma.

The degree programme offers students the opportunity to follow subjects at both partner institutes. Students develop key professional skills, which can translate into concrete career opportunities (including an academic career). Studying on both sides of the Dutch-German border enhances international mobility. Intensified European integration and continued EU accession highlights the increased importance of Europe in the public sphere. Successful graduates are prepared for a career in a united Europe whether at the national level (e.g. in the Netherlands or Germany) or at the European level (e.g. at an international organisation).

See for example EuropeanCall.org, a database for EU Affairs Jobs and Internships and possible employers.

Students are expected to work independently and in teams, be enthusiastic to conference centres for seminars and to international destinations for internships and graduation assignments. The intention is to create an environment, which promotes openness and enjoyment for both the students and the teaching staff. This combination should empower students to participate actively in and get the most out of the degree programme.
