The awful Dutch gender system

ERPs reveal difficulties in gender processing in native and bilingual Dutch speakers
The awful Dutch gender system: ERPs reveal difficulties in gender processing in native and bilingual Dutch speakers Grammatical gender can be a major stumbling block when learning a second language (L2), especially at a later stage in life, and the non-transparent and asymmetrical Dutch gender system appears to be exceptionally difficult to master. Interestingly, early simultaneous bilinguals and even native Dutch speakers have been reported to make mistakes when it comes to grammatical gender. A series of experiments were carried out to compare the online processing of grammatical gender to the processing of structures that are more frequently, more noticeably and more reliably present in the input.
