The Institute for Geoinformatics (ifgi) at the University of Muenster has an
opening for a
Junior Professorship (Juniorprofessur, W 1) in Geoinformatics
starting on 1 st of October 2016 or at the earliest possible date thereafter.
The initial contract will run for three years and will be extended for another
three years after a successful interim evaluation.
Who are we looking for?
Applicants should have an outstanding PhD in Geoinformatics or a related
discipline and should have a track record of additional research in at least
one innovative area related to Geoinformatics. Of particular interest are the
following areas of research:
- geodata analysis, in particular analysis of big geospatial data, trajectories, movement data or 3D point clouds
- visual analytics
- remote sensing, time series analysis
- sensor data and sensor networks
- volunteered geographic information
- geosemantics and linked spatio-temporal data
- geosimulation.
Applications with an excellent research focus in an area of Geoinformatics
other than the ones listed above are also welcome as long as they
complement research areas already present at the University of Muenster.
Applicants will also be required to contribute towards teaching (i.e. basic
courses related to Geoinformatics that are part of several degree
programmes at the Faculty).
The teaching load associated with the advertised post is four hours per week
during the semester (after a successful interim evaluation, five hours). Courses
are taught in English and German. In addition, the successful applicant will
supervise Bachelor and Master students as well as PhD students and
contribute to the self-administration of the Institute and the Faculty. Finally, it is
expected that the candidate establishes a research group.

The Institute for Geoinformatics is the first and largest of its kind in Germany.
Research and teaching cover the entire discipline of Geoinformatics. Core
research areas at the ifgi currently include: analysis and modelling of spatio-
temporal processes, interaction with spatio-temporal information, spatial
cognition, geodata infrastructures, geostatistics, geotechnologies in
education and smart cities. The ifgi offers a dynamic, highly international
