Brief Biography

Harald Strauss is employed as Professor (Chair in Historical and Regional Geology) at the Institut für Geologie und Paläontologie, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Germany.

Dr. Strauss was born on 27 March 1960. He obtained his "Diplom" in Geology in 1983 at the Technische Universität Clausthal-Zellerfeld and his Ph.D. in 1985 from the Universität Göttingen with a thesis related to the stable isotope geochemistry of Archean metasediments from Canada. He was a postdoctoral fellow for 18 months at Indiana University, working with John Hayes, and another 14 months at UCLA, the entire time as member of the Precambrian Paleobiology Research Group, a multidisciplinary research team focusing on the evolution of life in the Precambrian. In 1988, he returned to Germany and joined the research group of Ján Veizer at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. On April 1, 1999, he was appointed as full professor at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster.

Harald Strauss is a member of the Geochemical Society, the Geological Society of America and the Deutsche Mineralogische Gesellschaft.

Harald Strauss was elected as a member of the North-Rhine Westphalian Academy of Sciences in May 2012.

 

Research Interests

Research interests center around the biogeochemical aspects of earth´s evolution. Thereby, the isotopic compositions of carbon and sulfur in sediments, biominerals and organic matter are utilized as proxy signals for geologically and/or biologically driven processes.
Additional research involves the utilization of hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen and sulfur isotopes as tracers for biologically mediated reactions in anthropogenically influenced surface waters and aquifer systems.
