Postcolonial and Transcultural English Studies in Secondary Schools : A Forum for Teachers and Academics
Friday, 22 May 2009
This sub-section of the conference offers:
- a one-day training session for practising school teachers and for students in teacher training courses
- a forum for academics and school teachers to exchange experiences and ideas about different methods, opportunities and problems of teaching aspects of postcolonial and transcultural studies in school
- both general theoretical/methodological discussions and practical suggestions for lesson-planning
In recent years, school curricula for the teaching of English have
greatly increased their emphasis on parts of the English-speaking world
which lie outside the traditional 'core' areas of the British Isles and
the USA, so that there is a growing interest in
English-language literatures and cultures from Africa, Asia, Australia,
Canada, the Caribbean, New Zealand or the South Pacific, as well as in
migrations and diasporas that originate in those regions and countries.
There is also incrased interest in multi-, inter- and transcultural
phenomena (incl. those in the UK and the USA).
The Association for the Study of the New Literatures in English /
Gesellschaft fuer die Neuen Englischsprachigen Literaturen e.V. (ASNEL /
GNEL) has been specialising in these (and related) subjects for many
years, and its annual conferences have regularly included special
training sessions for school teachers.
Membership is not a prerequisite for attendance.
Fees:
One-day school teachers' fee (for Friday 22 May): 30 € (non-members), 25 € (members)
Participating teachers are also welcome to attend other sections of the conference (for fees information, see "registration" site).
