Abstract: In the first part of this talk, I will review compact manifolds with holonomy $G_2$, including some of their properties and some of the known constructions. In the second part, I will introduce Crowley's and Nordstr"om's $\nu$-invariants and sketch its computation for extra twisted connected sums.
