Thurston showed that the ways a 3-manifold fibres over the circle are controlled by a topologically-defined polytope. Dawid Kielak recently gave a generalization, using algebraic methods, that also covers free-by-cyclic groups. I will discuss joint work with Kielak in which we make this algorithmic.
