Structure-property relations of intermetallic europium and ytterbium compounds
We focus on the syntheses of new binary and ternary intermetallic europium and ytterbium compounds with transition metals and group-13(14) elements. Their structures are determined by single crystal and powder X-ray data. A main topic is the determination of physical properties, such as magnetism, electrical conductivity, specific heat, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. We are mainly interested in the determination of the valence status of europium and ytterbium with respect to mixed valencies and valence instabilities (i.e. EuII/EuIII or YbII/YbIII). Some of these compounds intricate by their rich diversity of magnetic properties like antiferromagnetism, ferromagnetism, metamagnetism, and spin-glass behavior.
