Extreme events such as floods, financial crisis, epileptic seizures, or material rupture have a big impact on the human society. To understand their underlying mechanisms and the development of tools to predict such events is on of the major challenges in the field of nonlinear science.

The intention of this workshop is to give an overwiev over recent developements in this in this field. The talks cover topics from such diverse fields as finance, metrology or medicine.
