EU ERASMUS Programme – Scholarships for work placements in other European countries

120 EuropafahneThe ERASMUS Programme run by the European Union is part of the European Education Programme for Lifelong Learning. For students at Münster University there are two ways of obtaining financial support through the ERASMUS Programme:

1.    For a work placement in another European country (Information on this page. Allocation through the Münster University Careers Service).
2.    For a period of study in Europe (No information on this page. For allocation and advice please contact the Münster University International Office).

Requirements for participation

Basic requirement for entitlement to a scholarship for an ERASMUS work placement:

  • You must be enrolled as a student at Münster University (for the entire duration of the work placement)
  • We advise you to hand in your application in person before you commence your work placement during the office hours dedicated to the financing of work placements. In individual cases applications are possible at shorter notice, but absolutely no applications can be accepted after a work placement has begun.

Legal notice: ERASMUS scholarships are not awarded on the basis of academic merit or achievement, i.e. grades obtained during your studies currently have no influence on the award of a place. Whether you receive an award or not depends on the number of applications for scholarships and on the availability of scholarship places. There exists no legal entitlement to a scholarship.

The planned work placement must …

  • … last at least three full calendar months (e.g. from January 5 – April 5)
  • … be undertaken on a full-time basis
  • … be undertaken in one of the following countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, the UK, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, Slowenia, Spain, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Hungary, Cyprus. In addition, the following regions: the Canary Islands, Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guyana, Réunion, the Azores and Madeira.

The following institutions and entities, among others, can accept work placements:

  • Companies
  • Goethe Institutes/ chambers of commerce/ schools
  • Research centres
  • Public institutions

Please note: a work placement at universities does not, under certain conditions, count as a work placement but as a period of study. If you have any questions please ask us during office hours.

No financial support is available for work placements in the following:

  • ... EU institutions
  • ... Institutions which administer EU programmes
  • ... Diplomatic missions of the home country/country of origin of the person receiving a scholarship (e.g. in a German embassy abroad)

If you are not sure whether the work placement you are planning entitles you to receive a scholarship, please come to the Careers Service for advice during office hours.

The department must …

  • … certify that the work placement will benefit the student in his/her particular course of study (letter of recommendation plus confirmation).

The provider of the work placement must …

  • … describe the designated activity to be carried out during the work placement
  • … enable the student to gain specific work experience related to his/her course of study
  • … confirm the knowledge and experience gained in a qualified testimonial

The following criteria rule out any entitlement to an ERASMUS scholarship:

  • A work placement which lasts less than three months
  • A scholarship simultaneously awarded for an ERASMUS period of study (you may receive a scholarship for each, just once, and one after the other)
  • A scholarship previously received through the ERASMUS or the Leonardo da Vinci programmes: You may receive an ERASMUS scholarship for a work placement or for a period of study only once in each case
  • A stay abroad during which you only attend a language course will not entitle you to receive any scholarship through the ERASMUS work placement programme
  • Work placements undertaken in countries other than the European countries named above
  • Work placements in
    • European institutions and centres which administer EU programmes
    • European institutions or companies/organisations which are financed by EU projects
    • Diplomatic missions of the home country/country of origin
