The iGEM competition presents each team with challenges that are not apparent to outsiders at first glance. The research-intensive projects require a large amount of laboratory materials, the use of special equipment or external support for successful implementation.
As independent projects detached from university research, the teams are dependent on support from companies, foundations and private individuals. This only works through sponsorship and donations of materials and financial resources.
