Material Analysis and Design: Study@home - The TOOLS Project

Please note that we now offer a project week for future teachers of English (Blockseminar) who still need to complete their study@home. It will be taught by teachers of the University of Vic, Spain, the University of Opole, Poland, and the WWU as part of the ERASMUS+ TOOLS project. As part of this international project, you will be placed in groups with international students from Vic and Opole University to study together.

Currently, video games are witnessing a ‘golden age’. With titles such as Minecraft or GTA V selling over 200 million copies worldwide, they have become a most prominent part of popular culture today. With this in mind, it is hardly surprising that video games are often frequented by children and teenagers, too. As the most recent JIM study shows (Medienpädagogischer Forschungsverband 2020: 54), 68% of the studied 12 to 19-year-olds play digital games daily or several times a week, while another 25% deal with them on a monthly basis. In a younger generation, in other words, digital games have become a force of entertainment to be reckoned with.
And yet, video games are more than just entertainment: games also afford numerous opportunities for learning and can be used to foster key competences in English language education. In my presentation, I will provide an overview over some of these learning potentials, by looking at concrete game examples and their affordances in the EFL classroom. Additionally, I will explore ways and approaches to implement games in teaching practice, since, so far, the question of how to work with video games has hardly been explored on a systematic level. In this context, the presentation will also deal with issues and challenges that go along with using this digital medium in an EFL teaching environment.

Please join us for a poetry performance by Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton, former Poet Laureate of the city of Houston, from her poetry collection Newsworthy, published by Bloomsday Literary in 2019. Newsworthy examines incidents with police brutality and the Black body and how the media chooses to report them. It won honorable mention for the Summerlee Book Prize, was a finalist for the Writer's Guild of Texas Book Award, and received a Pushcart Nomination.

M.A. NTS Applications 2021: Application platform NOW OPEN
Prospective students are now able to submit their application for the M.A. National and Transnational Studies via the university's electronic application platform (Bewerberportal) [de]
Applications will be processed in two phases and places will be offered accordingly. Applications received by 31 May will be evaluated in time for notifying candidates between early and mid-June. We encourage students to apply early and during the first application phase. In this way, successful candidates have a maximum of time to apply for visas (which can be time-consuming) and also to arrange funding, travel, and accommodation.
Candidates applying between 01 June and 15 July 2021 will be notified at the end of July.

Im Laufe der vorlesungsfreien Zeit wird das Englische Seminar uns derzeit noch fehlende Lehrkapazitäten im Vorlesungsverzeichnis ergänzen, um allen Studierenden die im elektronischen Anmeldeverfahren und im Nachmeldeverfahren nicht versorgt werden konnten, die benötigen Kurse anzubieten.
Darüber hinaus werden allen von verhinderten Auslandsaufenthalten oder Praktika betroffenen Studierenden im Wintersemester 2020/21 Vorlesungen (statt Seminar) im Modul "Culture and Communication" (Study at Home) zum Erwerb der erforderlichen Leistungspunkte in zwei Vorlesungen (in der Aufteilung 2 LP und 6 LP) angeboten. Corona Emergency Fund for Students
For students who are experiencing financial hardship due to the Corona crisis (e.g. because they have lost their job and cannot obtain another one, e.g. for health or family reasons), the university has established an emergency fund where students can apply for limited financial support (1 or 2 payments of up to € 450 each). Aufgaben der Inklusionstutor*innen liegen vor allem in der Informationsweitergabe zu speziellen Beratungsangeboten für Studierende mit Beeinträchtigung sowie in der Sensibilisierung zur Gestaltung von barrierefreien Veranstaltungen, Materialien und Studienbedingungen. Launch of new collaborative research centre at the English Department
The English Department proudly announces the launch of a new collaborative research centre "Law and Literature".
In the CRC "Law and Literature", researchers in the fields of literature and law will work together more closely than they have previously in Germany. This collaboration is based on the recognition that the disciplines' analysis of the key questions of their respective counterpart has been fragmented. In view of the heated debates surrounding fact and fiction as well as the disappearance of traditional media and the emergence of a legal communication vacuum, it is important that there is research into the content, processes and forms of articulation of normative and aesthetic values. The CRC aims to incorporate the entire cultural region of Europe and the Mediterranean into its research. (University of Münster, Spokesperson: Prof. Dr. Klaus Stierstorfer).

During the 10 year NTS celebrations in July 2018, WWU Rector Johannes Wessels officially launched the NTS AlumNet. As a digital forum, the AlumNet helps NTS alumnae and alumni to (re)connect and it facilitates exchange with current NTS students. The forum allows you to post and browse job as well as internship offers, and it lists relevant conference calls from various academic disciplines. Enabling you to exchange ideas, it brings vital debates into a virtual discursive space. The AlumNet is a further step in strengthening the wide-ranging network of MA NTS graduates which serves as a resource for your professional careers – both while studying in Münster and when you move beyond.
While the platform is managed by the NTS team, it is hosted externally in the vBulletin cloud. This means that vBulletin will store information about NTS AlumNet members on their servers.

STAFF MEMBER WINS BOOK AWARD
10 September 2018We are pleased to announce that our staff member Dr. Silke Stroh has won the ESSE Book Award 2018 (presented by the European Society for the Study of English) in the category “Cultural and Area Studies” for her monograph Gaelic Scotland in the Colonial Imagination: Anglophone Writing from 1600 to 1900 (Evanston IL: Northwestern University Press 2017).
10 YEARS ON: National & Transnational Studies in Münster and Beyond
07 July 2018Eighty students, alumni, staff members, and guests came together at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster to celebrate the tenth anniversary of our interdisciplinary MA programme National and Transnational Studies (MA NTS).
Opening the anniversary celebrations, WWU Rector Prof. Dr. Johannes Wessels highlighted the importance of the MA NTS as one of the University’s most interdisciplinary and international study programmes. With its high number of foreign students, averaging at 75%, the MA NTS has been contributing significantly to the international profile and cultural diversity of the WWU ever since its accreditation in 2008.
Before launching the new NTS AlumNetwork, course director Prof. Dr. Mark U Stein pointed to the steadily growing numbers of national and international applications which indicates the unbroken appeal of a transdisciplinary programme that transcends the conceptual boundaries of traditional thought and combines literary and cultural studies as well as book studies and linguistics. He also cautioned that the Land NRW is considering the introduction of tuition fees for international students — at a time when Europe is seen to keep non-Europeans out.
The anniversary programme was supplemented by several guest speakers. In a thought-provoking keynote, renowned photographer, writer, and broadcast journalist Johny Pitts (London) connected key topics of the NTS to his own photographic work and personal experience. Two talks by NTS alumnae Isabel Raabe (Oxford) and Selver Bener (Amsterdam) provided first-hand insights into the successful career paths of NTS graduates who are now spread across the globe – as scholars and lecturers at international universities or working in the media, for agencies, companies, or foundations.
10 YEARS ON also included the workshop “Strategies for the Sustainable Internationalization of an Interdisciplinary Field”, organized and chaired by PD Dr. Markus Schmitz. In the workshop, alumnae/i, current students, and faculty discussed how the NTS programme’s well-established informal network of internal and external partners can be translated into continuing exchanges, institutionalized partnerships, and stable collaborations between NTS alumnae/i scattered across geographical and disciplinary locations.
The celebrations concluded with a reception that offered plenty of time for students, staff, alumni, and other guests to catch up and network over food and drink. The event was kindly supported by the English Seminar, the International Office of the WWU Münster and the International Centre "Die Brücke".
NEW COOPERATION BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA AND THE wwu
13 June 2018The English Department and the University of Abuja (Nigeria) will work more closely together in the future.
