Patent Mining: What’s in a patent?
In 2009 AFO carried out two Patent Mining processes for patents in the fields of biology and medicine in order to test this newly developed format. Patent Mining presents possibilities for the practical implementation or development of patents or finds funding opportunities. The entire process is secret.
In principle, Patent Mining is the opposite of Ideas Mining. Instead of starting with a question to find a solution by means of a large number of ideas, the starting-point is the solution – i.e. the patent – and an attempt is made to build on this solution by means of lots of ideas. Patent Mining is a structured process and involves not only students but also scientists. However, the inter-disciplinary nature is preserved. Not only the process is different from that found in Ideas Mining – the creativity methods used differ too. Ideas are explored in clearly defined categories and in structured processes, so that all facets of a problem can be covered and solutions can be developed.
Several Patent Minings sessions are being prepared for 2010.
