Change Today, Shape Tomorrow -

ambassador of a better world

 What is MUIMUN?

Where students from Pakistan and India, China and Germany, Mexico, Israel and Nigeria talk, laugh and dance together, this project marks the beginning of an intercultural debate and the vision of change to a better world.

A Model of the United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations system.

In this model students assume the roles of ambassadors to the United Nations and debate the current issues on the UN's agenda.

Through diplomacy and negotiation, Model UN students seek ways that the world community can deal with complex global concerns such as the environment, economic development, refugees, AIDS, conflict resolution, disarmament and human rights.

Young people of all backgrounds and walks of life participate in these educational exercises to experience first-hand decision-making processes and diplomatic work at the United Nations.

The MUIMUN Team (Münster University International Model United Nations) believes that a Model UN is an unique opportunity to experience being an active part of international society. Students learn to understand global relations and the possibilities they have to help improve and transform the world into a better one. This is why we are looking forward to MUIMUN 2010 here in Münster where we can give our small contribution to the international community and help improve the situation worldwide with fresh and new ideas with students from all over the world.

2009 MUIMUN again exceeded all expectations. The then German Foreign Minister and MUIMIN patron in 2009, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, was impressed at the students’ commitment, saying, “It’s great to see what’s been built up here!”
Every year 200 students from all over the world take part in the one-week UN simulation, supported by AFO and prominent sponsors. Each participant represents one country and its interests in one of the six simulated committees. In 2009 the theme of the conference was “Scarcity – a Challenge for Security and Development”. The organising team hopes to contribute through MUIMIN to a better understanding between nations and to give participants an opportunity to get a taster of international politics.
Before the conference the organising team spoke with the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan who, in particular, praised the grants programme – funded by sponsors – for participants showing special commitment. “Keep up the good work!” he said.

Conference 2008

Topic: “New Approaches to Environment, Resources and Conflicts”

Nothing is as difficult as continuing a great success story. In 2007 participants of the newly initiated MUIMUN (Münster University International Model United Nations) project were thrilled by the international atmosphere of this experience. MUIMUN simulates sessions at the UN, in which students participate by taking on the role of real diplomats, representing the interests and policies of a foreign country in debates. The concept for the MUIMUN project was created by a former AFO member and has, since then, enjoyed administrative support from AFO.

The new team’s performance has certainly been on a par with that of its predecessor: 190 delegates from 35 different countries participated, reviving the diplomatic spirit of the Treaty of Westphalia. The project was praised as “an impressive experience for me personally” by the patron of the conference, Christoph Zöpel, former permanent secretary at the German Foreign Ministry.
