In October 2009 the touring exhibition organised by the Oberwolfach Research Institute was shown in six stages in the Stadthaus III. IMAGINARY showed in an attractive and understandable way how mathematics can be art: visualisations, interactive installations, virtual worlds and their theoretical background, e.g. from algebraic geometry and singularity theory, provided just such an experience of both art and science alike.
The “Surfer” programme developed for the exhibition encouraged visitors to adopt a playful attitude to geometry by setting up formulae themselves or creatively changing around formulae already in existence and turning them into pictures. Four schoolchildren received awards in a related competition.
The exhibition was designed especially for schoolchildren. A large number of schools from Münster and the surrounding area took advantage of the offer of a guided tour of the exhibition.
