ERASMUS FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS (EYE) - EUROPA EMPRENDE

Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs: What is that?

The market for young entrepreneurs is not only limited to Germany. Thus, WWU has been participating in the European Commission's project "Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs" (EYE) since February 2010. AFO who is responsible for the project's coordination within WWU is one of three project partners in the network "Europa Emprende". These partners, consisting of innovation offices and start-up centres, assist young entrepreneurs (new entrepreneurs) in finding successful companies (host entrepreneurs) in the European Union (EU).

"Erasmus" is mainly known for its mobility grant for students. But "Erasmus" is more than that. Young entrepreneurs are able to gain insight into companies operating in the EU and to work on specific projects together with experienced entrepreneurs. This experience is supposed to support young entrepreneurs in setting up their own business or to promote an already existing one.

Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs: Why?

Entrepreneurial initiative is of great importance for economic growth and the creation of jobs. Many entrepreneurs of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) lack management experience and other essential competencies. Together with the fact that the majority of small- and medium-sized companies operate in one country economic growth is constrained. The program "Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs" supports young entrepreneurs in acquiring the necessary competencies and to operate at the EU level.

This EU-program

  • offers young entrepreneurs the possibility, to learn from an experienced entrepreneur how to manage a small- or medium-sized enterprise in another EU country
  • enables the exchange of experiences between young and experienced entrepreneur
  • facilitates the entry into new markets and the search for potential business partners
  • strengthens the network of business people and of small- and medium-sized enterprises
  • enables experienced entrepreneurs to establish new business contacts and to come to know about business opportunities in other EU countries

Thus, the program supports entrepreneurial initiative, the competitiveness, the internationalisation and the growth of newly established businesses as well as of small- and medium-sized enterprises in the EU. Furthermore, the program contributes to the research transfer and to the development of management skills of managers of small- and medium-sized enterprises.

Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs: Who can apply?

The project addresses young (new entrepreneurs) as well as experienced entrepreneurs (host entrepreneurs). A general precondition is a EU residence permit. New Entrepreneurs are classified as being entrepreneurs who intend to set up a business or have already done so in the past three years. A convincing business plan, a CV, a motivation and the willingness to take part in the program clear the way for a successful participation in EYE.

Host entrepreneurs are entrepreneurs who have been owning or managing a company for more than three years.
