Video-conferences in 2008

Lectures with leading figures from the worlds of science and business are organized by AFO, the German Chamber of Commerce in Sao Paulo and partners from Latin America.

The lecture given by the Nobel prizewinner for Physics, Dr Johannes Georg Bednorz, also a member of the WWU University Board, started the video-conference series on May 27. He presented the innovative results of his studies on superconductivity. The lecture was held in the auditorium in the Institute of Physics in front of an audience of more than 200 people, including students. The German Chambers of Commerce in Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Asunción were also linked up to the lecture.

On October 27 a lecture was held on nanotechnology” by Prof Harald Fuchs and Prof Luisa De Cola. The Premier of North-Rhine Westphalia, Jürgen Rüttgers, participated in the video-conference at the Sao Paulo Chamber of Commerce and took an active part in the discussion.

The series of video-conference lectures entitled “Research transfer WWU/Mercosur” have been continued in 2009.

NRW Exhibition 2008 – Wuppertal

From 29 to 31 August 2008, the NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia) exhibition took place in Wuppertal, with its slogan of “Wuppertal moves itself and me and you”. Invited to attend by the Westphalia Initiative Foundation, AFO and the Centre for Non-Profit Management (NPM) were represented at Willy-Brandt-Platz. The Foundation and the NPM showed the results of their cooperation, including a masters programme on “non-profit-management and governance“.
In addition to other events that took place throughout Wuppertal, AFO presented its Ideas Mining concept. AFO took an innovative approach in promoting the concept of “Instant Ideas Mining”: passers-by were asked to write down the first idea that came to them in reply to the question: “Why should you commit yourself to doing voluntary work?”
This attracted people’s attention and got interesting discussions going. Additionally, more than 100 ideas were developed, which led to synergy effects for both projects.

NRW Exhibition 2007 - Paderborn

The City of Paderborn presented the NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia) Day under the motto "Between tradition and high-tech". This exhibition provided a platform for the state of North-Rhine-Westphalia to present itself in all its facets to the general public.

From 25 to 26 August 2007 visitors were able to take a look at the broad range of product and services on offer. About 600,000 visitors took the opportunity to get to know lots of things about North Rhine-Westphalia that they had hitherto been unaware of.

In particular, the projects presented by the MexLab (Münster’s Experimental Laboratory for Physics) were in great demand. Supported by AFO, the MexLab exhibited a self-made Foucault's Pendulum. In cooperation with the Westfalen-Initiative, AFO gave an introduction to Ideas Mining.

Some pictures of the exhibition can be found here.
